The area of Whitechapel and Spitalfields covers barely a square mile yet, out of the poverty surrounding the Jewish immigrants of the late 19th century and early 20th century, have come luminaries in the area of literature, science, entertainment and business, such as Isaac Zangwill, Jacob Bronowski, Jack Cohen (Tescos), Alan Sugar, Bud Flanagan, Joe Loss, Harold Pinter, Lew Grade, Bernard Delfont, Vidal Sassoon, Lionel Blair, Claire Rayner etc.
