13. On Sunday 4th October 1936 was the Battle of Cable street, when the local population, mostly Jewish, stopped an intended racist rally by Oswald Mosley and his blackshirts.

14. Gardiners Corner has now become a busy intersection. It was at the corner of Whitechapel High street and Commercial Road and named after the store, 'Gardiners', destroyed by a fire in 1972
